Mantanani Island (Pulau Mantanani in Malay) is made up of three islands – Pulau Mantanani Besar, Pulau Mantanani Kecil and Pulau Lingisan. It is well known for its recreational diving activities, dugong sightings, and the Usukan shipwreck diving sites dating from World War II. Even the story behind the name is fascinating. “Mantanani” is a compound of the Ubian word "manta" (blanket) and "Nani" (the name of a mighty man who fought the enemies that owned the blanket). According to one of the myths of the Kadazandusun people (one of Sabah’s ethnic groups), Mantanani Island was one of the two rocks that Kinoingan, the Creator according to Kadazandusun beliefs, had erected to bring ”balance” to the world that he had created. And guess what, the other rock was the one and only Mount Kinabalu!
The presence of dugongs (also fondly known as “sea cows”) in Mantanani’s waters has given it the nickname “Mermaid Island”. Interestingly, the word “dugong” translates to “lady of the sea” in the Malay language. According to traditional lore, mermaids are “aquatic creatures with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish”, who help fishermen who are lost at sea. Dugongs have a lifespan of 70 years, similar to humans. They have been listed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as a vulnerable and protected endangered species.
The Usukan wreckage, located just 38.2KM from Mantanani Island, comprises three Japanese ships, namely Kokusei Maru, Higane Maru, and Hiyori Maru. It was believed that the ships were torpedoed by the United States during the 1944 Pacific War. For years, the wreckage has been a hotspot for local and international diving enthusiasts. Sadly, in 2017, it was discovered that the wreckage was reportedly destroyed by uncontrolled salvaging.
